ASNA Hosts Its First-Ever Hackathon This Year!

This hackathon is an exciting event where participants collaborate to develop innovative tech solutions to real actuarial challenges, all within a short timeframe. Whether you’re new to programming or a seasoned coder, it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn, innovate, and work alongside peers in a team setting. ASNA is hosting its first-ever hackathon this year, and students from all years of study are invited to participate!

Theme:

Estimating the severity of auto claims is crucial for insurers to predict costs accurately and manage rising expenses, but challenges like unpredictable accidents, evolving vehicle technology, and fraud make it a complex issue. A hackathon on this topic is exciting as participants explore innovative data-driven solutions to improve claim predictions, tackle real-world industry challenges, and create impactful tools that insurers can use to optimize their processes and better serve customers.

Prize:

Winners will receive a $2,500 prize and a valuable networking session with the judges, offering great exposure and career opportunities.

Timeline

October 1st, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST

Registration Deadline

October 2nd, 2024

Round 1 opens with the launch of Kaggle, which contains all the necessary instructions for the first round. In this phase, teams will analyze a claim dataset from an auto insurance company and build a model to predict severity.

October 16th, 2024 at 11:59 EST

Round 1 closes

October 17th, 2024

The top 15 teams will be announced and will move on to the second round, which requires a written explanation of their approach. In Round 2, teams will need to thoroughly explain the model built in Round 1.

November 1st, 2024

Round 2 closes.

December 1st, 2024

The top 3 finalists will be selected and invited to participate in the final round.

January 18th , 2025

In the final round, the top 3 teams present at the ASNA convention in Niagara Falls, followed by a networking session with the judges.

Important information:

  • If you would like to compete but can’t find a team, please follow the instructions on the registration form. We can help you build a team.
  • Cross-university and non-member university teams are also welcome
  • All team members must be enrolled in a January 2025 Bachelors program to be eligible to compete in this case competition.
  • Please make sure before registering for the case competition that all team members will be available from January 17th – 19th, 2025 to present at the ASNA 2025 convention.
  • Due to the large volume of students that would like to attend the ASNA 2025 convention, we cannot reserve any spots for the teams participating in the hackathon. Please make sure that you sign up for the 2025 convention when the registration is open.
